The Importance to the Planet of Reducing Carbon

All human activity is responsible for emitting greenhouse effect gases, although the focus is mainly towards industries, agriculture, cattle raising and other large scale activities as being responsible for a greater environmental impact.  But if we stop to think, everything we do generates gas emission, and it is very important to measure and evaluate the impact that our activities provoke in the atmosphere, and how this interferes with climate changes, before it is too late to revert the damages caused by decades of global negligence, in a culture of waste and bad use of natural resources.

The world has stopped trying to find excuses and has begun to seek for solutions that can really make a difference in the short, medium and long terms.

In a study accomplished by the North-American research agency Union + Webster, published in 2019 by the Federation of Industries of Paraná (FIEP), 87% of Brazilian consumers prefer to buy products and services from sustainable businesses, and prioritize partners and providers that include environmental responsibility in their processes.   And this mentality results in behavior that stimulates adherence by businesses in diverse sectors, making them desire results that really have a greater positive social impact.  This represents a big advance with respect to corporate consciousness, disseminating a sustainability education that promotes a new environmental culture, not only in Brazil but all over the world.

And to implement sustainable actions, businesses count on some solutions in order to map their emissions. Among them, a process of inventorying to identify the sources of Greenhouse Effect Gases (GHG). The structure of the reports of this inventory is presented by the GHG Protocol and by ISO 14.064, organized by scope, evaluating the direct, indirect or energy consumption emissions. In this way, it is possible to calculate the carbon footstep left in every action of the process, helping the business to identify its biggest sources of emission and to seek the most adequate solutions to minimize its impacts on the environment. In practice, this means measuring the emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chloralfluorocarbon and ozone, gases that are converted into carbon, triggering the so-called greenhouse effect.

Currently, the sectors that are connected to direct and indirect sources of GHG can count on two alternatives in order to reduce the damages caused by their activities: the first is called neutralization of carbon, where the organizations can compensate for the emissions by buying carbon credits.  That is, they continue with the same levels of emission of GHG and compensate for these polluting actions by contributing to projects such as replanting trees, for instance.

The second solution, which requires an effort and a greater commitment by the businesses is adopting a transitional plan for a low carbon economy by making financial investments and periodically measuring results in order to reduce their emissions.

For some years now, FINK has been doing this work of reducing its GHG emissions, for we are fully convinced that by only compensating for the emissions by buying carbon credits is no longer a practice acceptable anywhere on the planet.

FINK is a signatory of the ECOVADIS platform, rigorously following the evaluation methodology of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which evaluates the quality of the responslble management system of a business through its policies, implementation measures and results. There are 21 criteria, grouped in environment, labor practices and human rights, fair commercial practices and sustainable purchases, based on the international standards of the CSR, such as the Principles of the Global Pact, the conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the norm of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the ISO 26000 standards and the CERES principles.

This type of socio-environmental conduct of fulfilling goals, auditing, follow-ups and certifications promotes re-education in every sector of activities that have GHG emissions, making people aware of the urgent need for the preservation of the environment, so that together we can all reach a higher level of sustainability.

We understand, in our corporate mission, that sustainability is at the top of the pyramid of commitments that we hold as our direction, and this way of thinking has nothing to do with business, but with our vision of the future for the next generations and the part we play in this huge challenge that we all face.
