When Returning Home is the Beginning of Everything
After years documenting conflicts, migrations, and human tragedies around the world, Salgado returned to Brazil and found a devastating scene: his family’s former farm, in the Rio Doce Valley, had become barren land. Instead of accepting the loss, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, chose to act and thus Instituto Terra was born.
What began as a dream of environmental recovery became one of the most successful ecological restoration projects in the country. More than 3 million trees were planted, springs began to flow again, and wildlife returned to its natural habitat. A portion of the Atlantic Forest was regenerated and with it, a powerful message: caring for nature is also caring for humanity.
Today, Instituto Terra is an international reference in environmental restoration and ecological education. A concrete example that transformation requires action.
Genesis: An Invitation to Contemplation
Between May 2014 and January 2015, the Museu do Meio Ambiente do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro hosted one of the most emblematic exhibitions of Salgado’s career: Genesis.
The exhibition led visitors through remote regions of the planet, from Antarctica to the African savannas, from the Amazon to the Galápagos Islands, revealing territories still preserved and communities living in harmony with nature.
Divided into geographic sections, the show was more than an aesthetic experience. It was a call to collective responsibility: to protect what remains intact.

Gold: A Portrait of the Human Condition
If Genesis is a hymn to life, Gold – Mina de Ouro Serra Pelada is a profound immersion into human strength and fragility.
Produced in the 1980s, the series portrays thousands of workers at the Serra Pelada gold mine, in Pará, set against an almost biblical landscape marked by extreme effort, ambition, and survival.
In 2025, 56 photographs from the series were newly mounted at the CAIXA Cultural units in Recife and Fortaleza, featuring striking scenography that brought visitors closer to the intensity of that historic setting.
These exhibitions carried even deeper meaning: Sebastião Salgado passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 81, in Paris, just months before the shows opened. As a result, the exhibitions also became posthumous tributes to one of the greatest photographers in history.
