The new coronavirus pandemic has altered the routine of millions of Brazilians. With the imposition of social distancing for the containment of Covid-19, many companies havve adopted the home office<\/a> as the work model, in order not to paralyze production due to the closing of offices, agencies and work positions in general. From improvisation to regulation, the theme is on the agenda in debates in Congress, as proposed by congressmen and senators from the Parliamentary Front for Public Service.<\/p>\n

This is because, while workers in essential services had to continue operating in their workplace, many other workers had to adopt the regime of remote work<\/a> as their new form of operation. The choice of the term \u201cremote work<\/a>\u201d instead of the popular \u201chome office<\/a>\u201d has a simple explanation: we are not going through a normal situation, propitious for working at home. Most of the workers did not receive any support, since it wasn\u2019t a question of choice for the companies, but just what was possible in times of social distancing. And the maintenance of Labor Rights in this new form is the heart of the matter, says senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), one of the coordinators of the Front.<\/p>\n

“Civil society and entities are already mobilizing. As rapporteur of the Labor Statute, I have joined virtually a group of labor advocates, specialists and public servants. The Labor Statute already has a whole chapter dealing with this form of work, which has come to stay. What is most important is guaranteeing workers all their rights. Telework is already a reality for several categories, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many professional will continue working at home. But it is necessary to discuss and regulate this modality\u201d stated the senator in an interview at the Senate Agency. This idea is shared by senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS) in a speech during the Parliamentary Front\u2019s eighth debate on public service during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s my understanding that in several sectors of our activity we are going to use this instrument offered by technology, in the sense of facilitating and optimizing the development of our work. In this sense, I will defend any initiative that will add to our effort to implement definitely into Brazilian society actions through telework\u201d stated Trad, referring to concerns about the health of the workers and the expenses they undertook during the period of telework.<\/p>\n

To reinforce the senators\u2019 argument, according to research by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), the migration from presential work to the home office may be adopted by over 20 million workers all over the country (22.7% of national occupations). With the realization of this projection, Brazil would hold second place in Latin America in a ranking that evaluates remote work, while, in a world ranking, Brazil would rank 45th.<\/p>\n
