The Amazon Caribbean \u2013 as the small fishing village of Alter do Ch\u00e3o is known \u2013 was elected by the respected English newspaper, The Guardian, as the first among the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n An ideal place to enjoy the \u201cAmazonian summer\u201d, between the months of August and December, it is the main tourist attraction of the second largest city in Par\u00e1, Santar\u00e9m, with its sandy beaches and blue, crystal-clear water. The place becomes a popular bathing resort when the river waters recede, and leave the paradisiacal landscape in view.<\/span><\/p>\n Tourists can enjoy some of the beaches on foot, leaving from the center of Alter. Cajueiro, Jacund\u00e1, and Praia Pequena are the easiest beaches to reach. The transportation to these beaches can be made by the \u201ccatraieiros\u201d (boat pilots) that wait at the bottom of the Alter do Ch\u00e3o stairway.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s not a bad idea to visit Alter during the flood period.
