Com status de estado semiautônomo, as ilhas se separam do continente por meio do Canal de Zanzibar. Sua capital, Stone Town, além de ser pátria-mãe do cantor da banda Queen, Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), a Cidade de Pedra foi declarada patrimônio da humanidade pela Unesco.

De acordo com a Unesco, três critérios foram determinantes para a escolha de Zanzibar como Patrimônio da Humanidade:

1 – a Cidade de Pedra de Zanzibar é uma notável manifestação material de fusão e harmonização cultural.

2- Durante muitos séculos, houve intensa atividade de comércio marítimo entre a Ásia e a África, e isso é ilustrado de maneira excepcional pela arquitetura e estrutura urbana da Cidade de Pedra.

3 – Zanzibar tem grande importância simbólica na supressão da escravidão, já que era um dos principais portos de comércio de escravos na África Oriental e também a base da qual seus oponentes, como David Livingstone, conduziam sua campanha.

O multiculturalismo de Zanzibar é encantador. Sua arquitetura é única, devido às influências de africanos, árabes, europeus e hindus, tudo isso aliado às belíssimas praias. Democrática no estilo de vida e preços, o arquipélago agrade desde mochileiros a milionários. A culinária, um caso à parte: deliciosos – e em conta – pratos com frutos do mar, como camarão, lula, caranguejo e polvo não podem faltar em uma ilha, mas, sem sombra de dúvidas, e curiosamente, a pizza de Zanzibar é coisa de outro mundo. Com massa bem fina, é esticada e recheada na hora e tem a aparência de uma esfiha aberta.

Zanzibar’s multiculturalism is enchanting. Its architecture is unique, due to African, Arabian, European and Hindu influences, all of this added to the extraordinarily beautiful beaches. Democratic in life style and prices, the archipelago pleases everyone, from backpackers to millionaires. The cuisine is special: delicious – and low priced – seafood dishes, such as shrimp, squid, crabs and octopus are a must on an island, but, strangely enough, the Zanzibar pizza is out of this world. With a very thin crust, it’s stretched and filled right before being served, and resembles an open esfiha.

Useful information: You’ll need an international certificate of yellow fever vaccination, and speaking English is recommended , since the other language option is Swahili.
