De beleza incalculável, mas de características expressivamente numéricas, fica difícil descrever o Deserto do Atacama, no Chile, sem enumerar os seus impressionantes atributos, muito além das incríveis salinas, vales, vulcões, gêiseres, lagoas e seus cânions de água cristalina. Portanto, não se perca nos números: são, nada mais nada menos que 4.000 metros de altura em um belo altiplano andino, concedendo o título de mais alto deserto do mundo, cortando a região norte do país até a fronteira com o Peru, com 1000 km de extensão. Sim, já que raramente chove na região, por conta da altitude – as correntes marítimas do Oceano Pacífico, simplesmente, não conseguem chegar até lá e as nuvens se desfazem antes de chegar ao deserto. Daí entra outro destaque numérico, quando o assunto é a condição climática. Nesse caso, é a variação que impressiona, tanto positiva quanto negativamente: viajar ao deserto é estar preparado para as mudanças de temperatura que vão entre 0ºC, durante a noite, até 40º C, durante o dia. Nada disso assusta aos amantes de trekking e montanhismo, além de atletas de mountain bike, motociclismo, off-road e montaria.

A incrível variação de temperatura explica o pequeno número de habitantes nas poucas cidades e vilas do Deserto do Atacama, como, por exemplo, em São Pedro de Atacama, uma das cidades mais conhecidas e que fica a 2.400 metros de altitude. São apenas cerca de 3.000 pessoas vivendo no local, considerado um verdadeiro oásis em meio ao deserto, já que fica em uma parte isolada e serve como ponto de encontro para os viajantes. A cidade, dona do deserto mais árido do mundo, é um belo exemplo das cidades locais que mantêm sua cultura preservada.

A preservação histórica é mesmo impressionante. Se o quesito é riqueza de registros, mochileiros, fotógrafos e/ou arqueólogos são os principais interessados em mais um número para a conta: seus inúmeros artefatos arqueológicos, principalmente pelas múmias com mais de 1.000 anos, que foram deixadas pelos Chinchorros, povo que habitou o local, à época. Turistas, em geral, também têm vez no Atacama: sim, por mais que não pareça, há vida noturna. Não é incomum ver bares e restaurantes lotados, tarde da noite, com turistas que se juntam, de forma natural.

A começar pelo Salar de Atacama, maior reserva salina do Chile, passando pelo impressionante Geysers del Tatio – que dá a sensação da terra estar viva, a cada espetáculo de água jorrada. Speaking of titles, the Atacama is the driest non-Polar desert in the world.

Yes, it hardly ever rains in the region. It is so high that the Pacific Ocean’s marine currents simply cannot reach there, and the clouds dissolve before reaching the desert. Here we find another numerical record concerning climatic conditions. In this case, it’s the variation that’s impressive, both positively and negatively: traveling in the desert is being prepared for changes in temperature that range from 0⁰C at night to 40⁰C in the daytime. None of this scares the lovers of trekking and mountaineering, as well as mountain bikers, motorcyclists, off-road drivers and horseback riders.

The incredible variation in temperatures explains the small number of inhabitants in the few towns and villages of the Atacama Desert, such as, for example, San Pedro de Atacama, one of the best-known towns, at an altitude of 2400 meters. The town, in the most arid place in the world, is a lovely example of local towns that preserve their culture.

The historical preservation is truly impressive. If the item is wealth of registers, backpackers, photographers, and/or archeologists are the most interested in another number for your list: its uncountable archeological artifacts, especially mummies over 1000 years old, left by the Chinchorros, a people that inhabited the region at that time. Tourists also have their turn in the Atacama: yes, though it seems improbable, there is a night life. It’s not uncommon to see crowded bars and restaurants late at night, with tourists that gather together naturally.

Don’t miss visiting – Now, on to the tourist spots in the Atacama Desert. Starting with Salar de Atacama, the largest salt flat in Chile, part of a National Reserve, passing through the impressive Geysers del Tatio – which give the impression that the Earth is alive at each sight of the water gushing. Don’t forget the gravitational bath in the famous Lagoons of San Pedro de Atacama, where nobody sinks when they dive, due to the high salinity of the water, such as the Laguna de Piedra (Lagoon of Stone). Don’t miss visiting the Church of San Pedro de Atacama, the archeological sites of Pukará de Quitor and the Archeological Museum of Padre Le Paige.
