Uma das mais belas praias do Brasil não fica no litoral e nem é banhada por água salgada. O Caribe da Amazônia – como é conhecida a pequena vila de pescadores de Alter do Chão – foi eleita pelo respeitado jornal inglês, The Guardian, como a primeira entre as dez praias mais belas do Brasil.

Lugar ideal para aproveitar o ‘verão amazônico’, que acontece entre os meses de agosto a dezembro. É o principal ponto turístico da segunda maior cidade do Pará, Santarém, com suas praias de areia fina e águas azuis cristalinas. O local se transforma em um concorrido balneário quando as águas do rio baixam e deixam o cenário paradisíaco à vista.

O turista pode aproveitar algumas das praias à pé, a partir do centro de Alter. As praias do Cajueiro, do Jacundá e a Praia Pequena, são as de mais fácil acesso. A opção mais badalada – A Praia do Amor – é uma faixa de areia logo em frente à principal escadaria do distrito. As outras faixas de areia mais afastadas e privativas, como a ponta do Cururu e a do Muretá, são lugares estratégicos para admirar um belo pôr do sol. O transporte a essas praias mais distantes pode ser feita pelos catraieiros (pilotos de barco) que ficam na beirada da escadaria de Alter do Chão.

Não é má ideia visitar Alter também durante a cheia. No período de exuberância das águas, dá para aproveitar os passeios de barco e as incursões pela floresta.

A pequena vila é uma opção incrível para aqueles que querem conhecer a Amazônia: oferece toda a infraestrutura necessária para receber o turista, a calma das belas praias que se formam quando o nível das águas abaixa e a experiência de conhecer uma das principais belezas naturais do Brasil: a floresta amazônica.

One of Brazil’s loveliest beaches is not on the coast, nor is it bathed by salt water. The Amazon Caribbean – as the small fishing village of Alter do Chão is known – was elected by the respected English newspaper, The Guardian, as the first among the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil.

An ideal place to enjoy the “Amazonian summer”, between the months of August and December, it is the main tourist attraction of the second largest city in Pará, Santarém, with its sandy beaches and blue, crystal-clear water.  The place becomes a popular bathing resort when the river waters recede, and leave the paradisiacal landscape in view.

Tourists can enjoy some of the beaches on foot, leaving from the center of Alter. Cajueiro, Jacundá, and Praia Pequena are the easiest beaches to reach. The most popular choice – the Praia do Amor (Beach of Love) – is a strip of sand right in front of the district’s main stairway. The other strips of sand, farther away and private, such as the tip of Cururu and the tip of Mureta, are strategic places  for enjoying  a beautiful sunset. The transportation to these beaches can be made by the “catraieiros” (boat pilots) that wait at the bottom of the Alter do Chão stairway.

It’s not a bad idea to visit Alter during the flood period. At that time, one can enjoy boat trips and excursions into the forest.

The small village is an incredible option for those who wish to know the Amazon: it offers all the infrastructure necessary to receive tourists, the calm of the lovely beaches that are formed when the waters recede, and the experience of knowing one of Brazil’s main natural beauties: the Amazon Forest.
