Moving house is a great challenge. Packing your belongings, your furniture, your appliances, your works of art safely is a great challenge. When this is done by someone not up to the task, the result isn’t always satisfactory, due to damages caused during the process. If it’s an international move, or if the goods are kept in storage for a few months, there is an extra risk involved: the smell of mold in the objects that remained too long in storage.

What do you remember of your history lessons? More specifically, of Pre-History? Still in our teens, we learn about the customs of the first human beings to inhabit the Earth. Many of those customs have been changed nowadays, while others persist, even after thousands of years. One of them is nomadism, in which groups wander in search of natural resources, staying in one place until the resources are depleted, then moving on in search of a new home.

Adapting this to the present day, we continue moving, either for economic reasons or for comfort and convenience, for instance. From caves to digital times, moving is good. Let’s analyze moving from two different standpoints: moving from necessity X moving from desire.

In the first case, you must leave your home on the way to another one. The prevalent verbs are “need”, “change” jobs or post (in another district, state or country), “separate” (from parents and friends), or “feel” that it’s safer, or emotionally beneficial to move.

In the other situation, the verb that defines the move is “want”. In that case, even without the need to move, since the place where you live offers comfort, safety and convenience, you still want to move house. This desire is inherent to human beings. It’s natural to want novelty. It is Plato’s Eros: Swinging between the frustration of loving and desiring what we don’t have, and at the same time becoming satiated when we achieve the object of our desire.

In both cases, moving house always brings benefits. If you’re moving because you “need” to, it’s normal to be afraid and be attached to the past. Therefore, the tip is to understand that “My home is where my shoes are/ A little bit in every spot and place” (as the Sa and Guarabira song says). You will be able to build an even better new home in a new place, for sure!

At the same time, moving because you “want” to is the opposite: fear of the old, need for the new. Or, quoting another song, “navigating is necessary/ living is not”, by Caetano Veloso (based on Fernando Pessoa, the great Portuguese poet). Proceed happily  on the way to your new home, even if nobody understands your need to move.

Always think of moving as an opportunity. Be it for a healthier routine or for new leisure activities. Besides, of course, the fact that the geographical move is clearly a chance for making new friends, or even finding a new love. And, if even after this text, you’re still afraid, the tip is: “Go. And if you’re afraid, go anyway!”

Understand that life is made up of cycles, and every cycle has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Like the verses in composer Lulu Santos’s song, Como uma onda no mar, (Like a wave in the sea), this is inevitable, natural, and needn’t be seen in a negative way, on the contrary: Everything changes all the time in the world/ It’s no use running away/ Nor lying to yourself now/ There’s so much out there/ Here inside, always/ Like a wave in the sea.

At the age of 30, Maria has already travelled to eight countries and knows dozens of cities throughout Brazil. Differently from her parents when they reached the third decade of their lives, the young lady doesn’t own a house or a car. Frankly, Maria doesn’t seem to care about that. Maria, a fictitious name, represents Generation Y, young adults who don’t seem to care about definitive choices, such as buying a house. On the contrary, they feel better leading a “gypsy” life, trying out new homes, neighborhoods and cities, together with partners, friends, or even pets.

The explanation is simple: this generation of 30 to 35 years of age, differently from its preceding generations, doesn’t measure success by material goods, but values moments, variety of experiences, and absorption of new cultures and lifestyles. To them, it’s more worthwhile to collect experiences, whether by living in different places, or by trips and exchanges, knowing other countries, or even other states in Brazil, instead of firstly becoming homeowners, which used to be everyone’s dream. It’s much better not to worry about parking space or the upkeep of a car if it’s possible to get a lift in a comfortable vehicle offered by numerous apps.

In liquid times, with a bow to Polish sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman, the transience of sensations reigns. The fear of “tiring” of an expensive material good, added to wanting their life choices to be different from the ones of their parents, and even the consciousness of the economic crisis that devastated the world in the past decade (and is still reverberating in this country), makes incurring debts (thinking of the future, such as buying real estate) an unattractive choice.  

The generation that lived for 10, 20 or 30 years in their parents’ house, often the same house for all these years, now wants to live in a place for the length of a rental contract, until a rise in social status allows them to move to a higher class neighborhood and/or to a place closer to work. According to Forbes, the average stay in the same job for workers of this generation is of 3 years. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to think of the future in buying a house in a place that might become far from the next job.

The same goes for “summer homes”. Instead of spending every holiday in the same place for years and years, what Generation Y really wants is to rent a room in an inn, a hotel, or an “Airbnb”.

Each generation has its own characteristics. Though it might seem strange to those who are used to measuring success and attaching a meaning of stability and financial guarantee to possession of real estate and vehicles, there is nothing wrong with the young Y adults. To them, nobody can take away what they have to tell, since learning and memories are priceless. After all, moving house is good, inside and out, from one house to another, and another, and another…

If you have a pet, it is important to also worry about their adaptation to the new home. Dogs and cats are usually sensitive to routine breakdown, and when this happens, the most common reactions are frequent heartbeats and tearing, unexpected bites and scratches, and even urination outside the trained site.

For change to occur without major trauma and interference, some tips are valuable. You’ll just need planning, patience, and of course much affection for your best friend. The first thing to do is to prevent the animal from going through the stress of the first day of the home exchange. Generally, this enters and leaves furniture and people, end up affecting the mood of the beast. Ideally, if possible, leave it at the house of a friend or relative.

Another important point: plan the change so that you can take the maximum amount of time to observe your pet. For example, on Friday: so you have the weekend to follow the whole adaptation. Always keep your pet’s routine. If you take him for walks, keep the ride at the same time and in the same amount of times. Also avoid changing your food and toys during this period of adaptation.

In the case of cats, it is necessary to emphasize that; above all, the protection screens must already be installed in the new residence so that the animal is then led home.
